Today marks the second Sunday of Advent - the Sunday of Peace.  We pray for Peace in all aspects of our lives - our homes, our schoolyard games, our communities and our world.  On Thursday at 1:30 p.m, the junior students participated in our second Advent Liturgy.

To help the students to participate in the loving act of sharing and giving during this time of Advent, they are invited to collect items to donate to the Shepherds of Good Hope.  At this time of year, there are many items the Shepherds need to assist the people who are staying at the shelter. The Grade 4 students are encouraged to bring in disposable face wipes and pocket sized kleenex packs, as well as clean pillow cases. Thank you to those who have already sent an item or 2 in - you have helped to make someone's Christmas a little more comfortable and happy!

Dear Parents & Guardians,

Field Trips and Events are an integral part of learning that often require volunteers. We are asking that if you intend on volunteering this year, that you share a Criminal Background Check with your child`s teacher before Christmas vacation (December 21st 2018). You can share by making a photocopy and sending it with your child OR taking a photo of the document and sending it via email. We look forward to having you come along as a volunteer to share in our learning journey!  If you would like to apply for a police record check, please go to ocsb.ca/volunteers.

Thank you in advance for your collaboration,
Junior Teachers

A reminder that Mme Corriveau is taking the Gr. 4 students sliding (weather permitting) on Tuesday afternoon. Please ensure your child has an extra pair of dry socks / mittens and a helmet, if required. Thank you.

-------------------------------------

Our next Math unit in both grades is Data Management. Grade 4 students will be using Stem and Leaf plots and  Double Bar graphs, while in Gr. 5 the focus will be on Broken Line Graphs and survey design.

----------------------------

In Language Arts, the gr. 4 students have mostly completed their cereal boxes and commercials, and the read-aloud the Gr. 5 students have been enjoying finished on Thursday. Once we wrap both of those up, we will be working on Christmas activities.

Week 14: Dec 3-7 The First Week of Advent

Today marks the first Sunday of Advent - the Sunday of Hope.  We have Hope in God's faithfulness to us, and in His promise to us of Eternal Life.  On Friday at 10:00 a.m., the junior students participated in the first of 4 Advent Liturgies to remind us of the importance of Hope in this season, and in our world today.

We are continuing our Advent Project this year, when we collect items for the Shepherds of Good Hope. Grade 4 students have been asked to bring in facial wipes and travel size Kleenex, both of which are readily available at the dollar store. The facial wipes are disposable pre-moistened wipes (not diaper wipes) and cost about $1.25 per package. The kleenex are the pocket packs. Grade 5 students are asked to bring in adult sized warm socks and / or balaclavas. Both groups are also invited to send in pillow cases. Please send items in with your child if you are able to. Thank you in advance!

Other happenings this week:
-Gr. 4 students will be visiting the Gr. 6 class to view their Indigenous Peoples projects on Tuesday morning
-our school's Advent Mass is on Wednesday morning at 9:30 a.m. Parents are welcome to attend.
-our Junior Week 2 Advent Celebration is Wednesday afternoon
-Friday during 3rd block we will be visiting our Faith Buddies and sharing activities of Hope with them.

Here's where we are in math and language:
Math - we took a little longer than expected on time, elapsed time, the 24h clock (Gr. 5) and measuring long periods of time (decades, centuries, etc) (Gr. 4). We will have a wrap-up test this week to see who has consolidated the concepts, and move on to data management in both grades. This unit will likely take us to Christmas.

Language - the Gr. 4 students are completing their cereal boxes, and marketing them to their target audiences. Most are filming commercials on the ipads. They are very entertaining so far! In Grade 5 we are continuing our read-aloud A Dog's Life, and after each day's reading we evaluate some aspect of what we read about that day. We are compiling these in a slide deck in their language folder in Drive. You are welcome to check them out anytime!
