Week 14: Dec 3-7 The First Week of Advent

Today marks the first Sunday of Advent - the Sunday of Hope.  We have Hope in God's faithfulness to us, and in His promise to us of Eternal Life.  On Friday at 10:00 a.m., the junior students participated in the first of 4 Advent Liturgies to remind us of the importance of Hope in this season, and in our world today.

We are continuing our Advent Project this year, when we collect items for the Shepherds of Good Hope. Grade 4 students have been asked to bring in facial wipes and travel size Kleenex, both of which are readily available at the dollar store. The facial wipes are disposable pre-moistened wipes (not diaper wipes) and cost about $1.25 per package. The kleenex are the pocket packs. Grade 5 students are asked to bring in adult sized warm socks and / or balaclavas. Both groups are also invited to send in pillow cases. Please send items in with your child if you are able to. Thank you in advance!

Other happenings this week:
-Gr. 4 students will be visiting the Gr. 6 class to view their Indigenous Peoples projects on Tuesday morning
-our school's Advent Mass is on Wednesday morning at 9:30 a.m. Parents are welcome to attend.
-our Junior Week 2 Advent Celebration is Wednesday afternoon
-Friday during 3rd block we will be visiting our Faith Buddies and sharing activities of Hope with them.

Here's where we are in math and language:
Math - we took a little longer than expected on time, elapsed time, the 24h clock (Gr. 5) and measuring long periods of time (decades, centuries, etc) (Gr. 4). We will have a wrap-up test this week to see who has consolidated the concepts, and move on to data management in both grades. This unit will likely take us to Christmas.

Language - the Gr. 4 students are completing their cereal boxes, and marketing them to their target audiences. Most are filming commercials on the ipads. They are very entertaining so far! In Grade 5 we are continuing our read-aloud A Dog's Life, and after each day's reading we evaluate some aspect of what we read about that day. We are compiling these in a slide deck in their language folder in Drive. You are welcome to check them out anytime!
